Im Jaehyoung

b.1988. lives and works in Paju and Seoul, Korea.

Im Jaehyoung collects and paints personal, social, and historical images related to absence, exploring the meaning of disappearance and the void in relation to the methods and implications of painting. Rather than depicting what is absent directly, he adopts a methodology of wandering, tracing what remains and the circumstances surrounding it. This approach reflects his artistic attitude of remaining with questions about the world that resist resolution, without arbitrarily resolving them or reducing them to fixed conclusions.

More recently, he has been examining a wide range of images, from medieval manuscripts to contemporary press imagery, considering the relationships between contact and non-contact, presence and absence, and surface and what lies behind it. Painting’s double sense of distance and the emphatic expressiveness of printmaking simultaneously conceal and reveal forms. His paintings invite interpretation yet resist complete resolution, and through this tension explore the multilayered relationship between image and meaning.
